INTRODUCTION

There is a great deal of evidence to show that the most significant area in which the use of construction fixings can be improved is that of installation. Badly installed fixings can put the stability of fixtures or even structures at risk and hence the lives of the users. There are two aspects concerned with this problem. The major problem is poor installation, a lesser problem concerns specifications in the way they are communicated to the installer.

Poor installation. Often this is the result of installers not following manufacturer’s instructions, not having been trained and not being supervised.  Anchors that are poorly installed will usually have a much lower safety margin than is expected. The consequences of poor installation can be serious if the application is safety critical, as many are, causing financial loss and injury or death in extreme cases. To help contractors ensure that installations are carried out safely the CFA is developing a programme under the title Competent Installer Training .

Specifications. The installer may rely on the specification details shown on the drawing for the information from which he orders the fixings and for the parameters by which he installs them. If any of this information is missing, or lacking in detail, the installation may be carried out incorrectly. To help specifiers call up the fixing with enough detail  to put the installer on the right track the CFA has developed a series of Sample Specification Formats which should help avoid some of these problems. To download these sample formats free of charge, simply logon with your email address on the home page and then click here. If you are not already registered with us you need to do that first.
